Benelux Chapter of the System Dynamics Society -- News
Video streaming available of the Second Conference of the Benelux Chapter of the System Dynamics Society on 'Complexity, Uncertainty, and Ethics'
On 14 April 2011, a conference on "Complexity, Uncertainty and Ethics" was held at Delft University of Technology. Most important issues and grand challenges are characterized by dynamic complexity (i.e. important change over time), deep uncertainty (and hence unpredictability), and important ethical dilemmas. This conference gathered scientists and practitioners working on one or more of these aspects in view of exchanging ideas on, and methods for, analyzing and dealing with (dynamic) complexity, deep uncertainty, and ethical dilemmas. Questions addressed during this conference included (but were not limited to): What is the state of the art for dealing with issues characterized by dynamic complexity, deep uncertainty, and ethical dilemmas? How could complexity, uncertainty, and ethical dilemmas be addressed (simultaneously)? What are the limitations of approaches for dealing with these aspects? What are the ethical implications of dynamic complexity and deep uncertainty for analysts and policy-makers?
This conference was jointly organized by the Benelux Chapter of the SD Society and the EURO Working Group on Ethics and Operational Research and hosted by Erik Pruyt of the Policy Analysis section of Delft University of Technology. The conference program (with abstracts) is available in following pdf: FinalConferenceSchedule14042011.pdf. More than 30 presentations were given of which following presentations were recorded and are now available online organized in 4 chapters (Thanks Michiel!):

Video streaming available of the First Benelux Chapter Meeting of the System Dynamics Society on 'System Dynamics and Health Care'
A 'System Dynamics and Health Care' was organized for Benelux Chapter members and Health Policy SIG members at Delft University of Technology by Erik Pruyt, Els van Daalen and
Etiënne Rouwette on Thursday afternoon 2 December 2010. About 85 participants showed up at this kick-off event of the Benelux Chapter of the System Dynamics Society in spite of the extremely bad weather. In the first parallel session, Bobby Milstein and Jack Homer presented and facilitated their national health care systems game (see http://www.cdc.gov/healthbound/).
In the second parallel session, guest speakers from academia and consultancy from the Benelux and from the Health Policy SIG presented some of their Health Care Systems related System Dynamics work. The program of the second parallel session consisted of following short presentations:
- 13.10-13.25: Erik Pruyt (and Caner Hamarat) – Exploring future epidemic/pandemic shocks? The use of Exploratory System Dynamics Modeling and Analysis
- 13.25-13.50: Martin Smits – Impact of policy and process design on the performance of intake and treatment processes in mental health care: a System Dynamics case study
- 13.50-14.15: Pauline de Heer [replacing Bastiaan van de Rakt] – Performance management in Dutch youth care – scenario analyses based on System Dynamics models
- 14.15-14.40: Jos de Neve and Peter Rakers– System Dynamics modeling of obesitas
break
- 15.20-15.45: Brian Dangerfield (and Norhaslinda Zainal Abidin) – Towards a Model-Based Tool for Evaluating Population-level Interventions against Childhood Obesity
- 15.45-16.10: Paul van Hooff [replacing Bert Karssen] – The Need for preventing depressions – a System Dynamics model
- 16.10-16.35: Radboud Duintjer Tebbens –Vaccine stockpile dynamics and optimization – application to cholera and polio
- 16.35-17:00: Etiënne Rouwette – Recent insights in the effectiveness of GMB – a case from health care
VIDEO STREAMING: All presentations (except the one by Jos and Peter)
were recorded and are now available online. The presentations before the break can be accessed here and the presentations after the break can be accessed here. After opening each of these links, you can click on the i logo (bottom left) to open a pop-up menu that allows you to select an Information or Chapters tab. The Chapters tab allows you to select a particular presentation.
